With the development of digital TV industry, digital Set-Top Box has become the necessary product among household electrical appliances. The arrival of information age, the high speed development of the network and the large scale enhancement of the band width and speed, has provided the very good hardware foundation for the wide variety of broadband applications. However, the present one-way transmission of television broadcasting can not meet the needs of daily life little by little, so the interactive digital television arises at the historic moment, and each kind of family multimedia center plan also appears with the network. What's more, the development of digital multimedia, video surveillance, wireless transmission technology, also urges the newborn profession like the family monitoring and security to start and develop. All these have provided a broad development and application space for the Set-Top Box as a home gateway device.The dissertation focuse on the characteristics of the hardware Set-Top Boxes, add the network module to the traditional Set-Top Box, develop its own TCP/IP protocol stack, and established its universal network interface and transmission interface, so that Set-Top Box can achieve the network media stream transmission. Finally, the Set-Top Box network player has been achieved, and the software development of the network Set-Top Box is finished. Therefore, this dissertation is mainly in three aspects: Firstly, the software system is builded on the STi7109 platform, including Bootloader created and porting, STlinux system porting, NFS file system foundated and cross-compile environment is established. Secondly, design the network and transmission interface for Set-Top Box to provide support for it as a network terminal, as well as analyze the TCP/IP protocol stack initialization process. Thirdly, in order that the final design can realize the Set-Top Box network player application, I will research service standard of digital television and each kind of network protocol applied in the video frequency IP network transmission. Users can use the player to carry on the reliable broadcast television information and video on demand (VOD), and also they may use the functions of time localization in the process of information selection. In addition, users can choose the program depending on their own demands and they can use the player that supported by the VFS file system to select the programs at the local storage device and also they are able to have a good control over the broadcast process to realize the media trick model play, like fast forward play, rewind play, the time seek play and so on.Finally, the dissertation summarizes the whole text, and makes the goal of the next step development, as well as made the forecast to the application prospects of Set-Top Box as the family intelligence multimedia center.
