The Institutional Repository (IR) emerged in the open access and e-science prevalent academia in order to improve away the defect of traditional scholarly communication. IR that is established and operated on internet by academic institution based on open access conception, provides an effective management of digital scholar asset for academic institution and brings a new type of open scholarly communication to researchers and e-science, achieving the object of sharing and spreading knowledge in the worldwide. Building IR has get widely attention and developed in the worldwide.IR is important to reforming traditional scholarly communication and following the trend of e-science and ensuring timely and fluently scholarly communication. Many methods, such as reading materials, comparative analysis, case study etc are conducted in the paper. The paper explored the model of IR based on Dspace in theory. From the project perspective, the paper started in analyzing demand of IR and studied the function, and than using grid technology constructed the six-storey model of IR in the basis of Dspace system. The paper first studied the researchers'demand of information and information service, as well as the functional demand of academic institution and the new scholarly communication context, deeply studying the function model of IR according to these demands. Secondly, the paper particularly constructed function model of IR:the resource management, open access,Interoperability, collaboration research,e-learning and individuation information service, and gave detailed illustration. Finally, according to the principle of standardized, integrated, developed, using grid technology constructed the six-storey model of IR in the basis of Dspace system, the six-storey model will support the function that proposed in the above paragraphs.
