Mobile Ad hoc network(MANET) is a multi-hop and decentralized wireless network formed by a set of wireless mobile nodes with wireless transmitting devices. With widely used of Wireless Ad Hoc Network and the increase of application on Ad hoc network, the limit of terminal device's battery becomes the bottleneck, and research on this field becomes hot.Power saving of MAC layer is central theme of this paper. Aiming at achieving power saving on MAC, first, the power consumption model of wireless network interface card (NIC) is analyzed and summarized, second, the communication factor of power consumption on nodes is studied, then main power saving mechanisms adopted by research are studied and analyzed. Based on which, a power saving MAC protocol based on IEEE802.11DCF is proposed. In order to achieve good power saving effect, this single channel MAC protocol combines power control and power-off NIC mechanism. Nodes in the network sense the channel to decide whether get into sleep state or not, and source nodes use different power level to transmit control packet and data. The protocol reaches a compromise between complexity and power saving effect, which make it easy compatible with IEEE802.11.Aiming at improving power saving in fully connected Ad hoc network, a protocol based on IEEE802.11PSM is proposed, which adopts scheduling transmission mechanism .The protocol simulation is set up by NS2, and result shows that protocols proposed has good power saving effect.
