RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) technology, which identifies electronic tags using RF signal without contact,is pervasive in our daily lives,e.g.masstransportation card, identity card, electronic passport, animal management, library management and so on.While yielding great productivity gains,RFID may creat new threats to the secrurity and privacy of individuals or organizations, such as tracing, counterfeiting, unauthorized access, tampering, eavesdropping and physical attacks. Due to the low cost requirement of most RFID applications,it is quite challengable to address the security issues mentioned above for the security scheme and circuit design of RFID tags. The security aspect on RFID tags is researched in this paper, and a security scheme to improve the security of ISO 18000-6C protocol is proposed and the security enhanced tag chip has been implemented and taped out.On the protocol layer, the security threats in ISO 18000-6C have been analysed and an appropriate security protocol is proposed.First, the authentication protocol can prevent the attacks of tracing, counterfeiting, unauthorized access and tampering, and the dynamic update of the authentication key and the index accelerates the key search process for readers as well as avoids eavesdropping.Second, the data encryption mechanism based on the OFB mode of the Block Cipher not only improves the data encryption efficiency, but also reduces the cost of tags.A timing and power optimized FSM based architecture is designed as the tag digital baseband for its low cost reason.Comparing several popular crypto-algorithms,a low power secure engine based on International Data Encryption Algorithm(IDEA) crypto is implemented on the tag. Finally, the security enhanced tag is verified on the FPGA platform, and the whole tag chip(including the RF end) has been taped out on SIMC 0.18 EE process.According to the test results, the tag chip can work in both the standard ISO 18000-6C mode and the security enhanced ISO 18000-6C mode.
