Radio frequency identification (RFID)technology is a non-contact automaticidentification technology that uses radio frequency signals to achieve recognition bypassing messages. As RFID technology continues to evolve, security and privacyissues are getting more and more concerns. Beeause of the restricts of cost, storageand computing capability of RFID tags, how to provide effective protectionmechanism for low-cost RFID system becomes a research hotspot. In this paper, for the RFID system’s security status, we have done some researchon security and privacy in RFID system from three angles: attack, model and protocol.First it analyses the threats in RFID system and compares the physical mechanism andauthentication protocol mechanism’s merits. We make a detailed analysis onlightweight, middleweight and heavyweight authentication protocols respectively. The existed attacks are also pointed out. Then based on the theory of provable securityanalysis, we compare two type of existing privacy models: label indistinguishablemodel and message unpredictable model. One of the most comprehensive labelindistinguishable models is improved, and a new definition of privacy is proposed. Atlast we design two lightweight authentication protocols. An improved protocol isbased on HB+protocol, and the other is a protocol that uses a new permutationoperation. The results show that the proposed protocols have some advantages interms of security and efficiency. This paper presents an improved model which provides a basis for analysingauthentication protocol’s privacy. The proposed two lightweight authenticationprotocols can achieve certification of low-cost tags effectively.
