As the technologies of HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) and HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) are getting more mature and the new applications of them are in continuous development, the data transmission speed that mobile customers satisfy nowadays is inevitably higher. WCDMA has been on its way of evolution from HSPA (including HSDPA and HSUPA) to HSPA+, which keeps the characteristics of HSPA and completely compatible with it downwards. However, in order to supporting even higher transmission speed and more abundant services, HSPA+ applies some new techniques, such as MIMO, 64QAM, CELL_FACH enhancements, L2 enhancements and CPC, to WCDMA.TFRC (Transport Format and Resource Combination) Selection plays a key role on HSPA+ implemented on Node B baseband. According to the practical conditions of the channels and network resources, it chooses appropriate transport format, distributing the proper HS-PDSCH channel codes, selecting the optimal modulation method, and indicating physical layer the transport format signal corresponding to the transmitted data TTI to realize the dynamic distribution of HSDPA physical resource in cells. Those new techniques mentioned above have significant influence on TFRC Selection.In this paper, HSPA+ and TFRC selection are deeply discussed and investigated. The main contents of it are as follows:1. WCDMA systems are first introduced and then its standards and evolution are analyzed. Later in this part, the concept of HSPA+ is brought on.2. Some new techniques which have been introduced into HSPA+ are studied, including MIMO, 64QAM, CELL_FACH enhancements, L2 enhancements and CPC. Meanwhile, the protocol investigation analysis of all those are presented.3. The origin, essential and function of TFRC selection are discussed. The effect on TFRC selection, from all the techniques above, is also analyzed in this paper, which lays a good foundation for TFRC design.4. The scheme design and the implementing methods of TFRC selection are proposed. After the discussion and investigation on the key points of TFRC selection, simulation tests are presented to make a decision on the choice of the scheme.5. In this paper, TFRC selection is implemented on Node B baseband, and the tests are carried out. The results of the system testing are shown that the key characteristics of HSPA+, including MIMO, 64QAM and L2 enhancements, are achieved on Node B.
