Language, especially in written form, is of great importance in the human history. Since written language appeared, human beings stepped into writing civilization. With the development of the society, the division of labor in society is becoming more and more calibrated, and the purposes of writing are becoming more and more professional, whose result is the emergence of many new writing styles. The development of modern news institutions helped to shape news writing style. Although news writing is definitely different from literature writing theoretically, they are inextricably tied up with each other. Under some historical and social conditions, journalists can utilize literature writing techniques to write news just like"American New Journalism"in the 1960s and"Chinese Prose News"in the 1980s. In China, literary news writing still exists and exerts a strong influence. The writing style of Southern Weekly is a typical example.In this paper, the differences between these two kinds of writing styles, the theoretical foundation for the utilization of literature writing techniques to write news, the comparisonbetween the New Journalism in America and the Prose News in China, the trend of literary news writing in China will be discussed.This paper consists of five parts. Part One is an introduction of this paper's purpose, significance, related definitions and a literature review on this field. Part Two discusses the differences between news writing and literature writing. In Part Three, the writer analyzes the theoretical foundation of literary news writing. Part Four presents the comparison between the New Journalism in America and the Prose News in China, and in the last part, quantitative research and case study about Southern Weekly is conducted to describe the trend of literary news writing in China.
