This thesis designs a storage network management system based on the Storage Management Initiative Specification released by Storage Networking Industry Association.Along with the explosive growth of the Internet and the popularization of information, the information storage becomes more and more important to both individual and compony. The demand of the users promotes the rapid development of the storage business. But the storage devices of different storage devices manufacturers have a very poor interoperability. The users usually buy devices from different storage devices manufacturers to avoid subject to a same manufacture. Heterogeneous devices bring users the mess of management and high costs. To solve the defects of the heterogeneous devices, the Storage Networking Industry Association has released a protocol named Storage Management Initiative Specification, refers to as SMI-S.SMI-S protocol provides a standers-based interface of management, so the data of the storage device can be regarded as logic components, such as Logic Unit, Storage Pool Etc. SMI-S can provides network administrator a standard interface by which the storage devices of different vendors can be found. We can collect information of the configuration, the state and the logic unit of the storage device though this interface.SMI-S is based on the two existing standards: the Common Information Model and the Web Based Enterprise Management. SMI-S uses the Common Information Model to describe the components of the storage area in document form, and then SMI-S uses Web Based Enterprise Management as the management framework, SMI-S implements the management of the components of storage devices by using the interface formulated by Web Based Enterprise Management.According to the specification of SMI-S, this thesis designs a network storage management system. The main work of this thesis contains several points as follows:1 First, this thesis introduces the history of the development, the architecture, the feature and the advantage of SMI-S.2 Then this thesis makes a detailed introcuce and analysis about the two existing and core protocols that compose the SMI-S: Web Based Enterprise Management and Common Information Model.3 Based on the analysis of SMI-S protocol, this thesis introduce the architecture, the grammar and the use of a third-party package which support and implement the SMI-S protocol.4 This thesis completes the design and implementation of the business module of SMI-S, the communication mechanism of every module of this system and the communication components between the devices and the system.5 At last, this thesis makes a performance comparison not only between the previous B/S management model and this system, but also between this system and another system which also based on SMI-S protocol but has a different implementation method. Through this comparison, reflects the advantagement of our system.
