In recent years, there are higher demands for the computing ability of computer in many areas. In some large-scale scientific computing, it is not possible to achieve desired effects to rely on only one or several ultra-high-performance computers. Under these increasing demands for computing power in research and commercial areas, grid computing technology emerges and has been developing rapidly. In order to improve performance by making full use of grid resources, the information of resource and computing task must be collected and displayed graphically to user. Then user can select scheduling strategy based on these information to enhance the utilization of resources. So, how to efficiently manage resources and computing task information in the grid is becoming the urgent and the major challenge. In this paper, with the study of the characteristics of grid and its data, the analysis of traditional data collection and monitoring system as well as its key technologies, a grid-oriented data collection and monitoring system GDCS is designed and implemented based on Manager/Agent model. ETL technology is put into its data loading process and an open source job scheduling framework Quartz is taken for automatic scheduling. Finally, the third party tool JFreeChart is put into use to display collected data in diagram. With a data collection project in a leading grid computing company, the design and implement of implementation each technology is described in detail. As the results in practical running turn out, GDCShas met the needs of business users in both functionality and performance.
