About Reports Of Suicide Theme

The suicide, an important public health problem, which seriously influences the development of society and economical, is a person finishes his own life with his own wish and means. A country's suicide prevention program should be a program which is comprehensive, integrated, covering many aspects of society and stressing cooperation. Because of its' profound affection on people 'thinking and behavior, mass media play an important role in the suicide prevention program. On one hand, in Structure functional theory, media are parts of society, making contribution to society by transmitting information and spreading knowledge. Media should give support to help the whole society settle the suicide problem to keep the society stable. On the other hand, many examples and research have proved that there are complex relations between media's reports and suicide. In certain circumstances, media's reports may influence society positively or negatively. In Social learning theory, one can learn new behaviors or change his behaviors from observing others' bebaviors. Those who are likely to commit suicide may get indirect experience from media's reports, and if the reports are not proper, they may wrongly settle problems which they face in daily life; if the reports are proper, their psychosocial crisis will be resolved. By sample research and content analysis, the text will discuss the current situation of media's reports on suicide. Now there are some problems in media's reports: discussion about suicide is too simple, results of individual cases are simplified, too many details are presented, suicide is transfigured. The text, from the view of "process",discusses media's reporting idea. Media, when report suicide, should keep the idea of "playing down negative results" and "paying more attention". Concering the structure, proper reports should contain three parts: preventive reports, on-the-spot reports;reflection. Only with these parts, media's reports can reach the goal of health communication. Refering to WTO and other contries and areas' reporting criterion, the text put forward some proposals for Journalists.
