"Computer Composition Principles" is a core course in computer science. Traditionally, experiments involved in this course are conducted with relatively stabilized instruction format, addressing modes, Arithmetic and Logic unit, controller, and Memory as well. The students usually carry out and confirm the functions, but very little independent design or renovation takes place. To change this situation, the current computer composition principles are to be renewed. By using FPGA chips as a carrier, applying the EDA development tools, implementing different hardware logic with hardware description language, and connecting with the input and output hardware interface circuits, a comprehensive computer system for the composition principles experiments is completed. During such a course, the students are expected to understand the functions of each individual part in this system and the collaboration among them. This experimental system will enable the students to experiment on both individual components and the whole machine. The former include the adder, multiplier, divider, arithmetic logic unit, controller, memory and etc.; the complete machine experiment can perform functions of each individual component. Such a system will help consolidate knowledge learned in the classroom, and enhance the students' capacity of designing. To achieve the above objectives, a comprehensive system is established on the basis of the procedure and methods of EDA technology, which include the control module, memory module, Arithmetic and Logic module, the general register group and the control components, the program counter, address registers, instruction register, timing components, data control part, the state value control components, as well as output observation components for adjustment by the students. Within the Quartus II development environment, using the FPGA chip manufactured by Altera Corporation, and the VHDL language design, the modules mentioned above are completed. During the emulation test, the functional modules are successful in both performing their individual functions and collaborating as a whole—it carries out program segments and various calculation, thereby proves to achieve the goal as formerly designed.
