Public opinion about China on western news media has long been the focus of academics, but as a branch of public opinion about China, public opinion about Tibet is not a hot topic in the field of journalism but in the area of international relations. Therefore, by probing into news reports in The Times and the The New York Times, this paper aims to explore reporting frames of the two newspapers, find out the trends of public opinion on Tibet and pinpoint the factors behind. The paper analyzes the reports from four aspects including scale, content, participant and preference, adopting the research method of comprehensive content analysis. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part introduces what inspires the writer to choose the topic and the current research in this filed. The second part proposes the samples selected, research questions and method, and presents the results of the content analysis. The third part answers the questions mentioned in the second part.Through the research, the paper finds out that The Times puts its reports under the"spot frame"while The New York Times puts them under the"effect frame". Although the two have different reporting frames, they guide the public opinion to the same way at last. And the public opinion on Tibet shows strong fluctuation, which is decided by the wrestling of China and the west.
