Traditionally, intermediates simply route and forward an information packet destined to some other node. Network coding is proposed to change this situation. With network coding, intermediates are not only capable of repeating messages but also of coding incoming messages. The main benefit of coding over intermediate is improvement of network throughput. Besides, network coding brings us the improvements of safety and reliability, etc.In this paper, network coding is applied on wireless sensor network. Through studies of successful delivery ratio and normalized redundancy, some researches on reliability and redundancy have been completed. The main works in this paper are shown as follows:1. Network coding technology is introduced especially random linear network coding. For network with network coding, mathematic modeling and deep analysis have been accomplished. The results show that network coding is more efficient in network reliability with a reasonable redundancy.2. With network coding and coupled with disjointed multipath and braided multipath, an improved protocol NC-RIF based on RelnForM multipath protocol is proposed and described. Analytic results show the improvements are helpful to the reliability of data delivery and load balance. In the process of analysis, some valuable references for selecting parameters of NC-RIF are provided.3. Analytical results of NC-RIF are validated in experiments with simulation software. According to the simulation results, the improvement of normalized redundancy is given. The results show that, with network coding NC-RIF is helpful to improvement of reliability and reduction of network redundancy.4. Some problems are concluded. These problems could be valuable for related future researches.
