With the development of networking technologirs and new services of Internet, there is an explosive growth trend of Internet traffic, which needs tremendous network bandwidth. Sinece optical fiber has high bandwidth and low wastage attribute,it has been playing an important role in the physical transportion layer in the communication network. However, their bandwidth is still underutilized, because of the limitation of electronic domain. Wavelength-division multiplexing(WDM)is a promising approach that can use the enormous bandwidth of the optical fiber. A single fiber can be employed for multiple data streams simultaneously. All-optical networks employing the concept of WDM and wavelength routing are considered as the transport networks for the future. In the backbone network, even several second outage caused by a failure can make huge lose of data, so it is necessary to protect the work-path with backup-path for the failure of work-parth, and this makes the whole network more reliable.Customer will not know the failure to take place in the network with this technology.The main points of this article are the reliability of the failure of work-path, and this makes the whole network more reliable. The main points of this article are the reliability of paths under various protect scheme in WDM and how to analyse the reliability of self heal ring (SHR) of SDH,and last the analysis of reliability of chengdu filiale of china'optical network.Chapter 1 will give some brief view and development of WDM, conclude the necessary of high reliability in optical networks. In chapter 2 we analyse the methods of high reliability,and analyse the reliability under various protect scheme in WDM network in chapter 3.We do the reliability analysis work of ChengDu filiale of china'integrate service network in chapter 4. As the frequent usage of SDH ring, we do the analysis of reliability for the case of node failure and link failure in SDH ring. Traffic control is discussed in chapter 5. Chapter 6 is the summarize of the whole thesis.
