Unified Messaging is a new fast-emerging telecom service. It's widely noticed and concerned about in foreign countries, and is also under developing in China due to the force of its giant markets. The result of the research and works done in the period when author was doing his CS master degree thesis was stated. The detail will be the UMS design and WEB-FAX module, which all the author took part in.The IN (Intelligent Network) is a hierarchy concept for producing and providing telecom services. It's not a network by itself own, but an addendum on the existing switching network. It provides the technique for easy addition of new services and the environment for implementing, debugging, running and managing. The IN's history in detail with the system structure of ZXIN10-IN as example was stated.Unified messaging service system is based on the basic design of communication systems of the two basic concepts: unified messaging packages and data exchange. On this basis, a package based on the unified messaging data and information exchanging of data sharing technologies were put forward to achieve UMS. At the same time, the structure of UMS was analyzed and a kind of design according to the application requirements was brought forward. The web-fax module which is in UMS under IN environment was introduced in detail. Web-fax was divided into database module, log module, fax send module, file transform module and fax receive module. In order to transform WORD to TIFF, A new technique that was writing virtual printer driver was proposed for. The file images were stored by this driver. Then file images were converted into fax Tiff format, thus realizing the transceiver WEB-FAX.Finally, the development of the system's timer management, log management, network data access and dissemination and other practical issues were discussed and analyzed.
