Printer is one of the most important output devices in computer system. As the connection of operating system and printer devices, study on the printer driver under windows environment has important practical significance. Meanwhile, a wide range of printers on the market and their different performance make the driver compatible with all types of printers is also a problem.Digital watermarking is an effective means of resolving copyright protection and disputes, through which you can track and manage the source of print information, and it will have a broad space for development and application in people’s stronger awareness of rights in today and the future. Therefore, the study on how to build a digital watermark embedded in the printer driver print to build a tracking system is of great significance.This paper focuses on the generic printer driver under the windows environment and how to build a the print tracking system on Windows XP platform, which include the generic printer driver and the digital watermark embedding, which not only make the driver have the versatility, but also include the watermark against attacks of print and scan to achieve the source tracking. Paper analyzes the printing system and the structure and principles of each printer driver system’s functional module, and analyzes how to build a printer driver framework using HP’s Universal Printer Description Language (PCL) which can run on any printer supporting PCL language. Besides, it also discusses the method and location of watermark embedding, ultimately accomplish the source tracing system.
