This paper emphasizes the short range wireless communication technique in an industrial data acquisition application. Among all the available solutions out there, this paper mainly focus on a low power RF device, nRF24E1 from Nordic, analyzes the device's theory of operations and system architecture.This low power RF device consists of two major functional blocks, an 8051 micro-controller and RF radio circuitry. As the most critical part of the system, this device enables the wireless data transmission from a transducer to a PDA. The system or technique that is examined here can be applied to real world applications, such as warehouse control, to provide an easy and cost effective way for managing materials.This paper also explains both hardware and software designs of such data acquisition system that utilizes nRF24E1 in detail. And provide numerous measurement data for performance analysis.The system consists three major functional blocks, data acquisition, RF transceiver, and PDA display. Data acquisition module is responsible for data acquisition in real time; RF transceiver module which is based on nRF24E1 is responsible for wireless data transmission, while PDA display module is implemented in C#, and utilizes various user friendly interfaces to interact with the users in real time.The system can be designed and assembled in a small, compact enclosure and provides a RS232 interface to connect to a PDA. The system consumes very little power, so using an internal battery to power the whole system can be realized to avoid bulky external power supply. After various testing and performance analysis, this system proves to be an easy, cost effective, and robust way for short range wireless data acquisition applications, and is able to reliably provide data transmission for up to 30 meters.
