Based on the huge demand of host mobility and the development of the technology, mobility support and safety assurance have become two core problems for the development of the internet. But when the TCP/IP protocol stack was designed, IP address was endowed with couple status: one for addressing to offer the router information, the other was to identify the network interface. The embarrassing status restricts its uses. IETF supposed Host Identity Protocol to solve this problem.The project《Analysis of the Internet Safety Architecture and the Key Techniques under the environment of IPv6》which was authorized by the National Development and Reform Commission intends to achieve accessing based on sincerity IPv6 address, and create a safe network architecture of the next generation. HIP introduced a new namespace Host Identifier (HI) in traditional TCP/IP architecture. The new namespace HI decouples the transport layer from the internetworking layer by using public/private key pairs, instead of IP addresses, as host identifiers. HIP layer maintains the mapping between IP address and Host Identity Tag (HIT) which is a 128 bit hash of HI. Host Identity Protocol is put forward as a solution of host mobility and safety in the project. And host mobility is transparent to the upper layers. HIP can provide safety to communication and mobile switching process.First the principle of HIP and its related conception are presented in this thesis. Then HIP's Rendezvous mechanism is introduced in solving the mobility problem after analyzing several host mobility solutions in traditional TCP/IP. After analyzing the limitation of using HIP in CPU poor devices, LHIP which is HIP's Lightweight extension by modifying the cryptography algorism used in BEX is brought forth to be applied in CPU poor mobile devices. Then we implement LHIP in Linux operating system. At last I make an analysis and comparison between HIP with MIPv6 in their performances and security. It proved that HIP has better application foreground than MIPv6.
