At present, either in IPv4 network or IPv6 network, IP address is usually be set for identify host and its location in the network. When the host moves in the network, as host identity, IP should not be changed. However, as the location identity, IP should be changed. Thereby, logic confusion will come into been. So IETF introduced a new name space: Host Identity and a new sub-layer---HIP. HIP is above IP layer and below transport layer. And by HIP, HI could be set specifically to identify hosts and IP is set free just to specifically identify the location of hosts in the network. Through this method, when the host moves in the network, as host identity, HI will not be changed, the only thing changed is IP. Mean while, better security performance during communication is required. So some reasonable methods to insure security are introduced by HIP. In this paper, the background of HIP is analyzed first, and some basic concepts of HIP are explained. And then, the basic communication process of HIP is analyzed in detail, including the process of the setup of secure connection in basic communication, message type, format in basic communication and the transportation process of packets. According to all of the analysis, two schemes of HIP basic communication are presented. By comparing the advantages and disadvantages of these two schemes, we finally choose to implement HIP communication by kernel modules. In the part of implementation, the software process flow of main messages in basic communication as well as main data structures and main functions are analyzed. In the last part, the test work for communication modules is done and the result is analyzed.
