Intellectual freedom is the universal aspiration and value objective of human beings. Librarianship is the product of human beings pursuing the ideal of intellectual freedom.Protection of human beings obtaining and utilizing information and knowledge equally is the core idea and the highest mission of the librarianship. From the point of basic theory of intellectual freedom, this paper firstly introduces the connotation, performance types, idelological and theoretical basis, and the significance of intellectual freedom.Secondly, this paper integrates the idea of intellectual freedom into the sphere of the library, researches and analysizes policy statements and codes of ethics for librarians associated with intellectual freedom in the international community and libraries of every country in the world. Finally, this paper probes into four key issues of the library realizing intellectual freedom: library rights, the neutrality of the library, codes of ethics for librarians and barriers to realize the principle of intellectual freedom.The aim of the paper is to provide theoretical and practical basis for our librarianship to defend intellectual freedom.
