The rapid development of modern technology arouses some critical requirements onthe RF/microwave devices and subsystems, such as low profile, miniaturization andhigh integration etc. Based on the research of substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW),one novel structure with more compactness and higher integration has been proposedand investigated theoretically for the first time. The width of FSIW is about 50%reduction than the original SIW but with almost same propagation characteristics. Thetheoretical formulas of propagation characteristics of the FSIW were derived, as wellas the formulas to calculate the geometrical dimensions. The theoretical results havebeen verified by a large amount of numerical simulations and experiments, goodagreements can be observed among of them, indicating the validity and accuracy ofthe proposed theoretical analyses. These formulas are expected to provide effectiveguidance for the engineering design of FSIW-related devices or subsystems.In succession, the discontinuity of many kinds of waveguide bends with SIW hasbeen discussed. The characteristics of H-plane FSIW bend with circular right-angle intwo different bands have been investigated also. The theoretical formulas of FSIWstructure have been proposed for the design of FSIW bend. The agreements betweenthe simulation and theoretical calculation verify the validity of our theoreticalanalyses. To further verify the validity of the proposed FSIW structure, one novelwide-band passband filter was designed, incorporating the FSIW structure andSCMRC structure, good agreements are observed between the Simulated results andexperiments. With such good features as low profile, compact size and highintegration, some novel FSIW RF/microwave devices and subsystems are expected.
