In recent years, embedded system developing fast in many domains, embedded system products well up and bring rich economic benefit to society. Embedded system is a special computer system, that based on computer technology, software and hardware can be configured, adapt to the application that needs good function, dependability, low cost, small volume and low power consuming.Embedded MPU (microprocessor) is the kernel of embedded system. But 8 bits and 16 bits MPU, recently often used, cannot fit the complicated system because of low speed, limited address ability, big power consuming and so on. So, 32 bits ARM microprocessor applied widely. It's biggest advantage is the high speed and low powerconsuming , that owe to advanced 32 bits embedded RISC MPU structure——ARMsystem structure.USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a very important bus structure, increasingly coming into vogue and applied widely in computer domain in last ten years, and has very important status in embedded system domain. Because of its many advantages, now its application research is developing widely. This paper will describe how to design and realize a USB mass storage system that based on FAT16 file system and ARM microprocessor. Also I will design a sound collecting and playing system that base on the mass storage system. This paper is divided into six chapters. The first chapter is a preface, mainly introduced the application of USB, development and future of ARM, target and meaning of the thesis, the hardware and software developing environment, my work for finishing the thesis and the experiment result, and so on. The second chapter describes the USB protocol, mainly USB2.0 Full Speed protocol. The third chapter introduces how to design and realize a USB mass storage system. The fourth chapter describes how to design and realize a sound collecting and playing system that based on the USB mass storage system. The fifth chapter shows the system test method and analyses the experiment result. The last chapter sums up the paper and expects the next work.
