Along with the flourish of wireless communication technology, wireless access technology based on IEEE 802.11 protocols, which has advantages of convenient deployment, flexible architecture, mobility, low cost and high scalability shows a good development trend. As the key equipment in a wireless LAN, Access Point (AP) manages the mobile stations and provides them Internet access service and coordinates the communication between wireless network and wired network. As a kind of programmable processor designed purposely for network processing tasks, Network Processor (NP) is widely applied in many fields of network due to its high performance and flexibility. Intel IXP425 is a middle/low-end NP for application of SME and SOHO. It is aiming at edged wireless access device, such as AP. The fundamental object of this thesis is to achieve the design and realization of AP base on Intel IXP425 network processor.Firstly, the IEEE 802.11 protocols have been analyzed in detail. Secondly, we proposed a hardware exploitation framework based on IXP425, and set up a software exploitation platform based on SnapGear Linux OS. Thirdly, on the basis of analysis of AP theory and function, we complete the design of AP system software framework and design the software module of AP service processing operation in detail. We offloading network bridge's MAC address learning/filtration, transform of frame format, and security encryption algorithm to associated NPEs and coprocessor by calling associated API in Intel IXP400 Access Library. Then the partial functions of AP service proceecing for hardware acceleration are realized. It is an effective method to avoid the waste of resource with pure software of AP service processing, and improve the performance of AP system dramatically. Finally, a Web management interface of AP based on Boa Web server is implemented.
