IPv4 will be replaced by IPv6 is inevitable because IPv6 can reslove the problem of IPv4 such as short of addresses, meanwhile IPv6 improves service quality, and implements autoconfigurate, it provides also better support of mobile and security. However, IPv4 has developed for such a long time that operations on IPv4 can not be migrated to IPv6 easily, it is a long process. During the long transition, the first issue we should solve is how to realize the transition. There are three main mechanisms: tunnel, dual stack and NAT-PT. NAT-PT is the critical technology for connecting pure IPv4 network and pure IPv6 network.Based on NAT-PT, NAT-PT transition gateway is designed to connect IPv4/IPv6 network. Since the transition gateway system plays an uppermost role in connecting networks, it is beneficial to implement the simple network management protocol (SNMP) on the gateway system. The operation of gateway system decides whether IPv4 can move smoothly to IPv6. So ensuring the operation of SNMP can ensure the operation of gateway, supervise the traffic going through IPv4 and IPv6 network and get knowledge of the network to ensure the connection. But due to the difference on protocol characteristic and the partly contradictory requirements of the two protocols, it is difficult to implement both the two protocol efficiently. In this paper we propose a Network Processor-based (NP-based) architecture for gateway systems which support both NAT-PT and SNMP, the architecture ensure validity and stability of the gateway system. Meanwhile, In order to improve system performance and ensure network connection, system architecture is further improved. One problem in transition system is that it is difficulty to enusre high efficient communication among modules and CPUs to collect management information base (MIB) distributed in the whole system. In this paper we also discuss various methods for the efficient communication and show their differences using experiemental data, finally designed and realized SNMP agent.
