EPON (Ethernet-based Passive Optical Network) is a point to multi-point broad-band access network based on the combination of Ethernet and optical fiber technologies. \In the downstream direction, the OLT (Optical Line Terminal) broadcasts it's packets to all ONUs (Optical Network Units) and only the designated ONU can accept them. In the upstream direction, multiple ONUs share the same transmission channel under the control of a multi-points access scheme and some Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation algorithms. The EPON system is cost-effective and has now been considered as a promising solution for next-generation broad-band access network. This paper mainly introduces the design of an EPON system, its working principle and ournovel schemes for DBA algorithms which were proved efficient by simulations. A system design and specially, the design of module based on FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) has been expatiated on.This paper has six different parts. In the first part, the background, advantages and developing status of EPON was introduced. In the second part, I studied the related international standards, introduced the principle and the key technologies. In the third part, I focused on the DBA algorithms, proposed some schemes and validated them by simulations. In the fourth part, I described a EPON solution and the realization of each part, including hardware and software. In the fifth part, I described the realization of the modules based on FPGAs in detail. In the last part, I gave the summary and expectation.
