As a system characterized in inertia, delay and nonlinear parameter distribution, the heating furnace can be used in continuous and batch heating with a variety of fuels such as blast furnace gas, coke oven gas, reactor gas, natural gas, heavy oil etc. Due to the fact that the heat status inside the furnace is hard to be predicted, many important parameters like bloom temperature distribution can hardly be detected on-line and the furnace type and process parameters are complicated as well, the technology of process control on heating furnace has not been further developed. Recently, with the development of IT technology as well as computer technology, a new intelligent control occurs, based on artificial intelligence, control theory and computer science, and brings an opportunity to crack the technical nuts in the control field. Being widely used in steel-making industry, intelligent control mainly comprises of expert control, neuro control and fuzzy control plus some intelligent robots. Occurrence of intelligent control provides a new way to solve the problem on the heating furnace control and offers a possibility for steel enterprise to seek its further development in 21 century.Taking the heating requirement on high speed rail to be produced in Pangang into the consideration, this paper discusses the application of field bus fuzzy control system in heating furnace combustion control in Pangang's Rail & Beam Plant. Avoiding the difficulties of detecting the difficult parameters in furnace control and of building up the models, integrated with fuzzy control and conventional PID control, ABB's Control IT system is used to predict the bloom surface and center temperature directly based on the temperature of furnace wall easily to be detected so that the temperature settings in various furnace sections can be self-corrected, the furnace temperature of each section self-adjusted and on-line parameters of combustion control self-optimized. In addition, the heating parameters and the operating status of the field plant can be monitored with alarm. The hearth pressure, pipeline pressure and heat exchanger are protected and the important parameters are sent to the factory-level MIS network.
