Optical bistability has been developed for about 30 years. Its basic thoery is highly developed and lots of optical bistable devices are prepared. These applications are, however, mostly focused on optical logic operation, such as, optical switches. So far, the application of optical bistability in display is infrequent. But the optical bistability has a set of active display-prepared characteristics. We, in this article, put forward a new active display method based on optical bistability, to reinforce the TFT active driving technology.LED display, being the most popular indoor and outdoor information display method nowadays, has a large market scale. To simplify the driving circuits, almost all the LED matrix displays run under scanning mode. In this drive mode, the total amount of light emitted from LEDs will be uniformly distributed and continuously applied during the scanning periods, according to the Talbot-Plateau law. As a result, the subjective brightness sensation form LED matrix displays will be drawn down. Current resolvents mostly focus on LEDs themselves, such as hi-luminance LEDs. Now, as a complementarity, we developed a set of bistable LED-units and driving method. It's demonstrated that the bistable LED display matrix can perform as well as those matrixes running under dc driving in subjective brightness and it is completely compatible with existing peripheral circuits, easy to use and spread.For further application in OLED active display technology,we developed a basic model of OLED bistable display unit, and settled its bistable carecteristic to construct the basic thoery of bistable OLED display.
