Since 1980s, the pattern of guiding culture, popular culture and elite culture which coexist has come into being in television communication in our country. The three cultures are inosculating and integrating due to the power, capital and knowledge they represent, and the relation among them is delicate and complicated. For twenty years, the form and power of the three cultures in television communication have been changing, but popular culture has always been growing vigorously. Television is the carrier of various popular cultures as well as an important part of popular culture. The history of popular culture and the development of television will be reviewed in this article to make clear the countless ties between them, and there-out probe into the development laws of the pattern of television culture.Popular culture has been studied and television has been criticized in the west for a long time. Our research on popular culture and television can refer to their research fruits. The most intuitionistic embodiment of the commercial character and the fetishism character of popular culture in television is the pursuit of entertainment, and the characters of television ensure that television fits entertainment most. It took more than twenty years for Chinese television to find the essence of entertainment and learn how to develop the cause of television according to the television laws. This makes popular culture have a growing share in Chinese television and begin to infiltrate into guiding culture and elite culture. The perfect culture pattern of Chinese television is coming into being. During this process, we should pay attention to the compromise and entanglement of multiple powers and deal with the relation between guiding culture, elite culture and popular culture. Only when the three cultures make use of and balance one another with the respect for the television laws can the communication function of guiding ideology and the knowledge-popularizing function of elite culture as well as the entertainment function of television be realized so as to form the patter of Chinese television culture where multiple powers coexist harmoniously.
