With the development of optical communication technology, lasers in the optical communication system have to meet the increasing requirements. Fiber laser, as a device with distinguished advantage, has received great attention from the world. The ring-cavity Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL), one of fiber lasers, will be studied in this thesis. The main contents are shown as follows:1. The background, history, sorts and development trends of fiber laser are briefly introduced.2. Based on fundamental Laser theory, transmitting equation and calculation model of output characteristics are set up. Then we design a ring-cavity EDFL which consists only of some common optical components, and write a specific calculation program to simulate the output characteristic of the ring-cavity EDFL. Some significant parameters, such as the optimal length of fiber and the coupled-ration of output coupler, will be obtained.3. We make a lot of experiments to prove the analysis above, a ring-cavity all-fiber laser worked at 1550.37nm was demonstrated with an output power of 12.9 mW and a bandwidth of 0.06nm at 3dB on condition that pump power is 43.1mW.
