As the rapid development of optical communication technology, high performance lasers are in great demand. During all kinds of lasers, fiber laser has received more and more attention from all over the world because of its distinguished advantage. Fiber lasers have been thought as one of the ideal light sources for the future optical communication systems. In this thesis, a novel kind of ring-cavity Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) was studied based on a traveling-wave rate-equation model and numerical simulations. On the basis of simulation result, some design parameters of the laser have been optimized and the guide for further researches and practical applications are concluded.The main contents discussed in the thesis are as follows:1. the basic theory and the formulation systems of fiber laser including the operating principles, characterization of Erbium-doped fibers, the traveling-wave rate equations model were discussed and derived.2. A novel kind of ring-cavity EDFL was designed, and the time and spectral domain models for the lasers were developed and numerically implemented in Matlab programs by employing a time-domain split-step traveling-wave model and a newly developed spectral domain model.3. based on the numerical simulations, the effects of various design parameters, such as the length of the Er-doped fiber, doping concentration, and pump power, on the EDFL performances were analyzed and optimized.4. the conclusion was given in the last part, and the efforts needed for further researches were pointed out.
