With the development of digital video broadcasting and the growing demand of users, there are new challenges for the transmission technique. How to transmit digital video signal with existing network has become a realistic issue. The research of network adaptation of digital video signal will quicken the integration of broadcasting cable network, telecom network and computer network.MPEG-2 is an international standard for video compression. It has been adopted by many countries and organizations as the standard of digital video broadcasting. DS3 interface is one of the most widely used interfaces of PDH/SDH network. Transportation of MPEG-2 stream over PDH/SDH is a solution for digital video broadcasting. The key technique is the adaptation of MPEG-2 transport stream to DS3 format.Based on an extensive and thorough study of the relative standards and specifications of DVB and ITU, this dissertation discusses the adaptation process of MPEG-2 physical interface to DS3 interface, and gives a detailed description of the implementation on FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Arrays).In the beginning, the dissertation gives an overview of digital video system and an introduction of the format of MPEG-2 transport stream, MPEG-2 physical interface and frame structure of DS3 stream. Then according to the principles of network adaptation, a solution based on FPGA is described in detail. The simulation of both the transmitter and the receiver demonstrates the feasibility of the design.This project, which is developed in Xilinx ISE 5.2i using VHDL, includes the design and verification of the modules to realize the main function of a network adapter.
