MPEG-2 standard is developed in response to the applications of Digital Television Broadcasting and High Definition Television. Based on digital video technology, especially the MPEG-2 standard, this thesis completes MPEG-2 video encoding software. The software can run on TI's multimedia processor DM642, and can encode video images at 25 frames per second in Dl resolution (720x576 pixels). On the condition that the bitrate is between 1.5 M bytes per second and 10 M bytes per second, the bitstream can be decoded to high quality video.Chapter one describes the foundation of video compression technology and DSP technology, and then it brings forward the mission of this article.Chapter two introduces the theory of video compression,and the advantage and disadvantage of compression standards. Then it explains the key technology of MPEG-2 recommendation deeply.Chapter three introduces the development platform. First, it introduces TI's multimedia processor —DM642. Then it describes the software development platform, including the integrated developing environment (CCS), eXpressDSP arithmetic standard, chip support library CSL), driver development kit (DDK) and the steps of software design.Chapter four particularly presents the design of software. Firstly, design the framework of software system, then develop the MPEG-2 arithmetic on PC and modify the structure. The third step is to port the PC software to DM642 and optimize the encoder.Chapter five tests the whole system about function, performance and reliability. Chapter six summarizes the system and gives it's meaning in general aspects.
