Applying principles and related techniques of stereo vision to 3D measuring and modeling has been an everlasting research topic in the field of computer vision. In this paper, we focus our research emphasis on several unavoidable issues of stereo-vision based measuring, such as camera calibration, calibration points / feature points extraction, image matching, reconstruction and 3D triangulation. Regarding the contradiction in vision-based measuring, resulted from the system's overall precision, speed and cost, we find a desirable balance point, toward which a series of improvements are implemented in order to satisfy the foot modeling requirements for customized shoe-manufacturing. Our solution was proved to be effective by plenty of laboratory experiments, as well as industrial products. In section 1, we give an introduction about the research background of the project and related technologies. The advantages and disadvantages of various measuring methods are briefly discussed. Meanwhile, the specific goal of the research is also clearly defined in section 1.Section gives an overview about several typical related commercial systems, out of which comparisons are provided, advantages and disadvantages discussed.Section 3 deals with a group of relevant key principles and techniques which include camera calibration, edge detector, image matching, stereo-vision based 3D reconstruction and unorganized 3D points triangulation.Section 4 describes a system overview of our approach, while the details of two key issues, primarily feature points matching and 3D triangulation, are explained step by step from section 5 to section 6. In each section, clear sub-problem definitions along with the respective solutions are provided.Section 7 is dedicated to several critical issues in the software development. Typical issues are human machine interface design, overall software architecture, and key data structures.Section 8 demonstrates the executable instances in normal experimental order. Besides, detailed analysis and discussion about the results are also provided.Section 9 contains a few comments and possible improvements for the research work. And you can find a full list of references in section 10.
