With rapid development of WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network) technology, its security problem be focused by more and more people.Nowadays most WLAN devices in the market are based on IEEE 802.11 standard. IEEE 802.11 uses WEP(Wired Equivalent Privacy) mechanism to protect data transmission securely, but security shortage is realized widely, WLAN haves not enough security by WEP. In order to so solve this problem, IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) designs the new security protocol IEEE 802.11i. IEEE802.11i improves WEP from user authentication, key management and data confidentiality protection.Firstly this paper analyses security shortage in WEP,and then introduces security development about IEEE802.11i from three aspects of user authentication, key management anddata confidentiality protection.Compared with WEP , That IEEE802.11i has used stronger cipher arithmetic and stricter authentication process call for more high-powered AP (Access Point) hardware. But AP hardwares are competent for this.As a result this paper designs a new hardware system of AP with cipher co-microprocessor based on IEEE 802.11i. this hardware system adopts 32bit ARM microprocessor and provides multiplicate external interfaces and flexible memory system. IEEE802.11i uses AES(Advanced Encrypt Standard),this increase process spending. In order to improve AP performance about processing cipher arithmetic,AP hardware system use FPGA as cipher co-microprocessor and execute AES by hardware. The AP hardware system provides multiplicate configure ways for FPGA so that system upgrade.the AP hardware system match well to IEEE 802.11i.
