To obtain the objects on the ground using the images taken by the satellites or planes is an important method of using space technique to obtain information of the earth. It has been widely applied to national defense, economic construction, environment protection and earth resource reconnoitring. With the development of the computer performance and the development of image processing technique, using computer to detect and discern the objects in remote sensing picture has become the hot spot.As one of the problems in the pattern recognition domain, the airport recognition has a significant application prospect in the military affairs.But the ultimate purpose of the airport recognition is to put it into practical application. However, at present,there isn't any airport recognition which can be used in any background. It means the application of airport recognition still needs more research .A new method to solve the problem of airport recognition and runway detection is presented. The research results included in this article are as follows :1.the method of Fuzzy Enhancement is used to preprocess the remote sensing picture,and then the parameters of the different picture quality before and after the processing are compared to demonstrate that Fuzzy Enhancement is feasible and effective.2.extracting airport areas: first,the method of threshold value division is applied toimage segmentation, then the pixelt marking method is used to extract the maximumcross-connection domain as possible airport areas and eventually the algorithm of ROI(region of interesting) is applied to implement the orientation of the possible airportareas.3. the characteristic of remote sensing picture,using Canny operator to extract the edge of the picture after the comparement of several classic edge division algorithms.4.analyzing the defection of extracting straight line using traditional Hough transform method, then proposing an improved Hough transform method.with the analysis of the former definited possible airport areas, we could precisely extract straight line from edge pictures and discern the airport runway according to the inherent characteristic to ultimately determin the airport areas.
