This thesis for the degree of master mainly studies the theory, method of the computer technology of virtual reality, and also focuses on its application to virtual tourism system. Firstly, VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) is a language to create the virtual 3D modeling. And X3D is a more mature standard than VRML so authors can achieve the behaviors they expect. This top list gives several compelling reasons: VRML compatible, XML encoding to integrate smoothly with other applications, X3D is componentized, X3D is more rich feature, X3D is continually being enhanced and updated. And the application to virtual tourism system will bring the programmer a significant social and economic value, because it supersedes the ordinary 3D panorama technology and makes it realizable that the inter-net uses can ramble in a bran-new tourism.Secondly, the thesis puts forward the design and framework of virtual tourism system. And it also discusses such key problems as modeling, interacting and data-base access technology. Concretely, they are the reappearing the real scenic spot, the designing of distinct navigation and route, and the constructing of a complete tourism database information system. Based on VRML/X3D, the programmer takes the VR main teaching hall of Kunming University of Science and Technology for example, and practices the method of the computer technology of virtual reality. After integrative analyses, we find the feasible flows of VR modeling. The flows are: creating a photo-realistic 3D model from several scanned or digital photographs based on image; using function of inline node, Outline3D software to make the single model together; using Vizx3D, X3D-Edit to transform VRML to X3D; using ASP and ADO(Active Data Objects) to access the data-base; using JavaScript to realize the interaction and navigation of VR scene; using the Media Machines's Flux and the Bitmanagement's BS Contact to browse, navigate objects in the VR scene; using the common 3D display, mouse to reach a low price.The provided model gives characters as follows. We import VRML/X3D technology to virtual tourism system, and make the model a more vivid effects, suchas dynamic clouds viewpoint-switched > background music and commentary> the start-up of car^ 2D chart. And we apply database technology to manage and access the tourism information, and inquire the ASP web page. Then, we test and publish the model, so we finish a systemic demonstration.At last, the prospect is put forward. The next step is more realistic complicated scenes and animated effects, and we will focus on more completed data-base relatedwith SQL. These are the trends all over the world.
