With the rapid development of Internet, the closer combination of consumer electronics, communication, TV movie broadcast and computer technology, and the unavoidable tendency of combination of computer, communication, and entertainment, the digital audio has become one of the fastest development and the largest scale industries at the beginning of this century. As the resolution project of digital audio with Internet as its medium, MP3 is very popular in digital audio field. This paper describes a study on algorithm of the coding and encoding of MPEG/Audio compress Layer III and the implement of the module of IMDCT. Analyzing the major three modules in the compression algorithm, including encoding of sub-band filter bank, MDCT, psychoacoustics model. Also analyzing the encoding algorithm, including IMDCT, ploy phase synthesis filter bank, Hufferman decoder, invert quantization and recording. IMDCT/MDCT are used in MPEG/Audio compress Layer III to reduce the bandwidth requirements. IMDCT is one of the most computation-intensive parts of the MP3 decoding process. A fast, hardware based IMDCT implementation is crucial to speed the MP3 decoding process. Among many implement schemes of decoding, the one using chips is the fastest one. Specific decoding chips like FPGA or ASIC have parallel processing structures, which make them be much fit for being high performance data processing processors like Digital Filter, Fast Fourier Transform, Discrete Cosine Transform, etc, and also be the key part of high performance data processing systems. The implementation is synthesizable Verilog code at the RTL level. It is suitable for real time video applications.
