The microwave power module (MPM), a super-component consisting of a wide-dynamic-rang hybrid solid-state / vacuum-electronics microwave amplifier with an integral power conditioner, inherents advantages of these three technologies. It is suitable for radar, electronic countermeasure, decoy, and airborne or ground-based communications applications in military and commercial system. The miniaturization of the traveling wave tube (TWT) is one of the key elements in the design of MPM. In this dissertation, each of the TWT component building blocks is presented. The theories, designs and mechanisms of each subsystem are discussed. The main context focuses on four aspects: The analysis, including cold-test calculations, for helix slow-wave structure has been a long standing problem within the TWT industry. Cold-test parameter is the premise of the beam and wave interaction calculation. Using high-frequency electromagnetism code CST MWS, the cold-test data is computed. Then a VBA macro, which is suitable for all structure helix, is exploited to compute the cold-test parameter in a short time without any off-process. Compared with experimentally measured results, the agreement existed excellently: the average error of dispersion is within 1.6%, and interaction impedance within 3.5%. The initial value of the convergence half angle in the iterative synthesis is discussed and a more logical function is given for assigning the. Using our new function, reasonable results are got with the low-convergence ones which can not be settled by Vaughan's method. Therefore, the application range of the iterative synthesis is extended for the low-convergence Pierce Guns.
