This paper discusses a solution of video conference terminal based on IP network,and present a example of a STB style video conference terminal.After comparion and argumentation, tradeoff was made between system performance and difficulty of development.the hardware framework of this video conference terminal make up with MPEG-4 encoder and decoder based on vw2010 chip,main controller based on x86 core and PC compatible STPC SOC chip,ethernet adapter based on Rtl8139.and,this hardware platform can run Linux operation system. After learning of the details of correlative chips and the design requirements,we have done a number of works on hareware design of video conference terminal such as:schematic,PCB,debug and test ,system function test and validation. In the test ,we connect two of our video conference terminal in a ethernet,one as server and one as client, so that we realized transferring of MPEG-4 audio stream and video stream on the ethernet,and the quality of the video (D1 resolution) and the sound is satisfactory. Based on this haredware platform a practical video conference terminal can be developed. The following work are done by the author: 1. Argued video conference terminal hardware solution,selected framework hardware chips. 2. Designed the main controller based on STPCC5 soc chip, finished schematic,PCB,debugging and the main controller works well in the video conference terminal. 3. Designed ethernet adapter module based on RTL8139 chip, finished schematic,PCB,debugging. The ethernet module works well in the video conference terminal. 4. system test and validation of single terminal and double terminals on ethernet.
