In this paper, the selvage apparatus on 3-D multi-rapier loom is developed, and improvement on machine and the development of control system is investigated for industrial application.In the research of the selvedge apparatus, three schemes are brought forward and analyzed through experiment; finally the knitting method to perform the selvage of 3-D fabric was employed. According to the characteristic of 3-D loom in existence, leading-yarn needle and crochet hook is designed in the selvedge apparatus to realize the selvedge by using the knitting method. They are all driven by high pressure air cylinders with different models, which are chosen based on the demand of various moving parts. The apparatus element is controlled by electromagnetic valve, so it can syncretize very well with the loom.Multi-layer tabby fabric is woven after the development of the mechanism. Six rapiers are used in the weaving practice, chemical fiber yarn with greater tex value is used as the warp and weft. The fabrics with rectangle and "T" sections are woven. It can be seen through analyzing the fabrics: the woven preform is compact and unitary; in addition, the weaving efficiency is high because of the twin-weft insertion technology; Especially the structure of the selvage is very compact and level, it's ideal for fabricate the preform.The research also conducted improvement on the shedding, weft delivery, selvage formation, beating-up, take-up, and let-off motions in the 3-D loom. The improvement makes the loom more practical and graceful. At the same time, control system of loom is developed. It adopts PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and computer instead of I/O card and computer. New system employs SIMATIC S7-300 PLC, featuring high reliability, strong anti-jamming, perfect function, good flexibility. As advancer of PLC, computer has a CAD&CAM system software. This system has universal function and friendly interface, especially the operation is simple. The core of CAD is computer-aided design and profile modeling of 3-D fabrics' interlaced discipline. The core of CAM is that computer transmits signal to loom to check andcontrol the weaving process via function module of system.In virtue of this thesis' research, the weaving of 3-D fabric gains automatic production and concentrative management. The research work promoted the manufacture of texitile structural composite.
