The modern society is rapidly developing towards the information society, while multimedia technology is one of the most important technologies during this change. It has merged into many disciplines and the national economy. As the main part of multimedia, video and audio technology is being extensively researched and applied, meanwhile, it promotes the communication technology, such as internet network, wireless mobile network.As one of the most important device for real-time signal processing, Digital Signal Processor (DSP chip) is being widely applied. And ISO/IEC and ITU propose a series of standards of audio and video coding which made a foundation of the video and audio communication. It is invaluable that combining the strong data processing ability of DSP with the advanced and high-efficient image compression technology, developing a video and audio coding system which is compatible to different standards.We choose the video and audio coding hardware system theory and its implementation as our thesis research subject, and select the DSP TMS320DM642 as the operation hardware platform of this system.This paper emphasizes on the overall and detailed design of that system. At first, an overview of the video and audio coding hardware system and related background is introduced, and then a detailed solution is presented. Following, the application of DSP in this system is deeply analyzed, the hardware designs about DSP' interfaces are analyzed, and all modules' detailed hardware circuits are given. Also, this paper details the complex and high-speed logic control and timing schedule design. Finally, the debugging and analyzing records are also included.This hardware system can be applied to quite a few domains, such as digital monitoring system, video meeting, video phone, etc.
