As the development of information technology, media information like audio and video plays a more and more important role in people's production and livelihood. In the meantime, people put forward higher requirements for the quality, bandwidth and fluency of audio and video. Efficient compressing algorithm becomes the critical technology for the transmission and storage of audio and video data. MPEG-4 video standard gives block architecture and bit stream format of video compressing, but no concrete implementation of algorithm.This thesis researches, designs and implements video compressing algorithm conforming to MPEG-4 standard based on the architecture of TMS320DM642. This design makes full use of many peripheral resources on TMS320DM642. This system can implement capture and compressing of high definition video of 720p and works well.Firstly, the development situation of audio and video processing system and the structure principle and property of TMS320DM642 are introduced, and the working principle of Vport(Video Port) and McASP(Multichannel Audio Serial Port) is mainly discussed. Secondly, this thesis makes a detailed introduction to the design flow of audio and video device Mini driver using integrated development environment CCS(Code Composer Studio) and DDK(Driver Developer Kit). Thirdly, video compressing algorithm conforming to MPEG-4 standard named XviD is introduced. Fourthly, this thesis describes the transplantation process of XviD and gives some optimization solutions according to the feature of TMS320DM642, and the optimization result is tested. Subsequently, the performance of audio and video processing system is tested under the lab environment and the running result is given. Finally, the work of this thesis is summarized and future work is prospected.
