The paper derives from an engineering project named "PC monitoring system" . In the paper, still image coding technologies are proposed and a JPEG2000 Image Compressing System based on DSP is realized.The paper describes two popular still image coding technologies including JPEG and JPEG2000. It first presents the basic principles of JPEG, especially including the function modules of DCT, quantity and entropy coding. The main goals and basic structures of JPEG2000 is presented and its proper skills is introduced in details. The core modules of JPEG2000 standard-wavelet transform and bit-plane coding-are described detailedly. On the other hand, the functionalities of JPEG and JPEG2000 are compared and the encoding method is selected.Then, the software realization of the system is completed. In the system, we select TI company' s TMS320C6711 DSP chip as our encoding chip. When the encoding scheme is selected as JPEG2000, the program is migrated into DSP and optimization is developed. First, the arithmetic is selected and adjusted as the requirements of the system. Then, we optimized memory allocation, c/assembly language and bus operations. Thus the on-chip memory of DSP is well used, compiling function is greatly improved and the ability of bus is advanced. So the compression ratio and image quality are ensured and encoding speed is improved as possible as we can.
