For the past decades, infrared imaging detection has found many critical applications in various defense systems; it is used to observe target day/night, especially for target detection, recognition, tracking during night. It has already become a major fire control and observation means in high performance weapon platforms. A lot of research has been carried out in this field at home and abroad so as to develop fire control equipment for various weapons; infrared radiation characteristic test for environment and typical targets is an important basis for weapon system theoretical modeling and system design. Based on the R&D engineering requirements for an attack helicopter of Chinese PLA, a thermal radiation analysis for a military base environment is conducted and thermal radiation measurements are carried out for a tank and a military truck. This paper describes measurements for spectral radiation characteristics and temperature distribution characteristics of the thermal targets around the base with SR 5000 spectral radiometer and AGEMA900 infrared imaging temperature tester. The spectral radiation profile, integrated brightness for a given waveband, thermal pictures and data are given, and temperature difference between typical target and the ambient is calculated. Furthermore, corrections are made for apparent values and true target observation values are achieved based on test distance and ambient atmosphere parameters. Then, the apparent value from target to test tower is calculated with relative target distance, thus a reference for positioning the weapon system test tower is provided. With AGEMA900 infrared imaging temperature tester, some thermal graph tests in 8-12 m band are carried out for the chosen tank and military truck under vertical and horizontal movements in day/night, target infrared characteristics (8-12 m band frequently used in army systems) are provided for electro-optical system design in fire control system, different temperature distribution trends for selection of thermal imager in fire control system based on quantity analysis. Quantitative data analysis necessary for stealth is provided for the improvements of the tank.
