It uses the space diversity technique on the multiple input multiple output channels to provide diversity advantage and coding gain for wireless communications. Furthermore, its spectrum efficiency significantly exceeds that of conventional single-antenna systems. Since the advantage of space-time coding, there has been extensive research and it is very likely to be used in next-generation mobile communication systems. The major points of this thesis are to research the space-time trellis code (STTC) techniques and the space-time turbo code techniques. The main contents of this thesis are as follows: The structure and principles of MIMO systems will be described at first, and we will prove the fact by information theory that MIMO systems have better performance than conventional single-antenna systems. We discribe the state of the art in space-time code techniques and list main classes of space time codes'structure characters and performance, by this work, we clarify again the significance of researching STTC and space-time turbo codes. We introduce some kinds of performance criterions which are used in the space-time codes construction. These criterions'development and application come into being the space-time coding theory. We will use the space-time coding theory to design the STTC. The major purpose of this part is to find out the methods to design the STTC of best diversity advantage and error correcting ability. We give a efficiently scheme which can be used to search sub-optimal STTC for arbitary transmitting antennae wireless systems and several fast searching techniques for obtaining the optimal STTC.
