Uplink power control technology plays a key role in the 3rd generation mobile communication systems. Simulations on uplink power control in WCDMA are performed in the first part of the thesis. Then a structure of the preamble capture module for PRACH is evaluated and implemented in the second part. Power control is the most important radio link control function in WCDMA system. It is mainly divided into two parts: open-loop and closed-loop power control. Closed-loop power control is composed of inner loop power control and outer loop power control. In this thesis an algorithm of uplink inner loop power control is studied and evaluated by simulations on a reversed link platform according to WCDMA standards. Different parameter settings for this algorithm are used to evaluate the performance of the algorithm, especially under some practical conditions. The scheme of outer loop power control is also studied on same platform, to see the effectiveness of uplink power control technology under single-user as well as under multi-user conditions. The preamble capture module is very important in the establishment of PRACH channel. In the second part of the thesis, several structures of the capture module are compared with computer simulations. Based on the simulation results, an effective structure of preamble capture module with low hardware cost and good performance is reached and implemented on RTL level. The whole module is verified on the FPGA platform.
