Considering the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), rate equations for integrated erbium-ytterbium co-doped waveguide amplifiers (EYCDWA's) with pumped of 980nm wavelength are analyzed using overlapping methods in this paper. The effect of pump power, amplifier length and signal gain on the noise characteristic of EYCDWA's are discussed. Based on the foregoing theoretical analysis, parameters of waveguide which affect the gain character and noise figure of waveguide amplifier are optimized. Furthermore some methods to reduce the noise figure of waveguide are proposed.In order to reduce the noise figure of EDWA, a tapered waveguide structure is brought forward. The characteristics of transmitssion, signal gain and noise figure are numerical calculated. A stencil for optical lithography is made. Planar and channel waveguides (with optical lithography) are fabricated in erbium/ytterbium co-doped phosphate glass substrate. The mode refractive index of ion-exchanged planar waveguide at 632.8nm wavelength is obtained by m line technology; the near field figure of lightwave at 632.8nm transmit through channel waveguide is obtained. The refractive index profile of planar waveguide is obtained with inverse WKB method by measured mode refractive index.Finally the gain characteristic of waveguide amplifier is measured. The measure method of noise characteristic for Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped phosphate glass waveguide amplifiers is investigated.
