With the fast the development of computer network, video compression and other related technologies, the study and applications of multimedia have gained more and more attention. Now people can retrieve and utilize many kinds of information conveniently, including text, graph, cartoon, audio and video. Along with more and higher demands on multimedia quality, however, it has been an urgent problem how to improve the quality of multimedia transmission with a limited bandwidth.After analyzing the current typical architectures of network transmission for multimedia, we put forward a new architecture which is the guarantee of QoS and is suitable for the transmission of real-time multimedia data. It is mainly composed of two parts, i.e., the adaptive control algorithm for network adaptive multimedia transmission, and the error and dither control of multimedia data.The paper concentrates on the adaptive control algorithm for network adaptive multimedia transmission, which can reduce the network congestion and data transmission delay, and improve the real-time video service. It is realized by estimating and monitoring the status of message loss over a RTP-based network, and smoothing the output stream of the senders.The error control and dither control are two important parameters for evaluating the service quality of multimedia system. Forward Error Correction (FEC) is irrelevant with any particular medium. In this paper FEC is used and media data is able to transmitted correctly if the appropriate network bandwidth is satisfied. Otherwise, the dither is rejected effectively by adopting a ring buffer at the receivers.In the practical applications there exist many kinds of networks which have different bandwidth. In order to meet these requirements, a frame rate adaptive strategy is designed to solve the transmission problem of video streams over various kinds of network bandwidths, and the ideal transmission quality is reached.
