This thesis describes the embedded system which is designed for the technology of plate license recognition (PLR) in intelligent transportation systems (ITS). It covers the method of software development and hardware design in the embedded systems.This thesis begins with the concepts of embedded computing system, intelligent transportation systems and plate license recognition. It gives the total solution of the embedded system design. The hardware of this system is based on Intel StrongARM SA-1110 and the software is based on embedded Linux. It is developed under GNU open source software tools (GCC and its cross-compiler, toolchain).In the following chapters, it presents the installation of GNU toolchain, the bootloader, the transplant and the optimization of embedded Linux kernel, the file system and the init bash in the ARM platform. It describes the transplant and the optimization of the plate license recognition algorith from other platform. It also gives the method of the GUI development (QT Embedded). Based on the hardware design process and design principle, it demonstrates the schematic models, such as CPU, Memory, CPLD, Ethernet, USB.In summary, the methods and results described in this thesis are conducive to the applications of ITS and the technique advancement of embedded system.
