In recent years, due to the phenomenal growth of networking and communication systems, embedded system becomes increasingly important and popular on the Internet and other technical areas. Research and development for embedded systems have become a hotspot currently. The huge market demand is latent in embedded systems. StrongARM of Intel PCA architecture extinguishes itself from the existing RISC microprocessor chips by the high speed, low power consumption and abundant peripheral interfaces, especially in the handheld PCs and PDAs. Because of the increasing complexity of the embedded systems, the embedded operating system has become the most important part of the embedded system. As the base of embedded system, embedded operating system has a significant effect on the system performance. Consequently, embedded operating system has been one of the focuses of embedded system research. As an open source operating system, Linux is more and more concerned for it's well performance. However, as Linux is not designed for embedded systems, many problems should be resolved to port Linux for embedded system. In this thesis, ARM series processor and StrongARM platform's characteristics are first analyzed. After comparing with several embedded operation system, the advantages of Linux as embedded operation system are summarized. The thesis also has a deep research about the key technology as porting Linux for embedded area, including Real-time kernel, file system and management of memory. Combining with the StrongARM platform, this thesis gives the development process of embedded Linux for a certain hardware platform, including building the cross compiler, modifying and configuring the kernel and realizing the root filesystem and booting the kernel. The ARM Linux starting source code is also analyzed. In the end, the thesis analyse RTP protocol, come up with three schemes to improve the permence of the protocol and accomplish the implementation of real-time speech transmission over the built embedded system.
